5. Organize Like a Pro

Last but not least, create zones within your closet for different categories of clothing. Designate specific areas for tops, bottoms, dresses, and accessories. Bonus points for color-coding – it’s like your own mini rainbow right in your closet! Once something has a home, it’s easier to put it back.

Tidy Heart Transformation | A functional fridge makeover

Small spaces can still have a big impact! Case in point, creating a functional, organized refrigerator saves you time and money. Let’s dig in!

The Challenge + Solution

A busy family needs to be able to inventory what’s in their fridge and easily find ingredients to get dinner on the table after the rush of the day. Who hasn’t been there – post-daycare pick-up or school, hungry kiddos and no idea what we’re cooking?!

In tackling this fridge, we talked about creating zone: thawing drawer for making sure ingredients are ready to go for the week, leftover zone, fruits, veggies and dairy. We also needed a space to have easy access to kid snacks and milk.

In the end, we created those organized zones and it helped this family keep on top of inventory – saving money because you’re not buying what you already have and made it easy to find and prioritize leftovers or find the ingredients they needed to make meals.

These organizing bins are easy to pull out and manage snacks or a category of food. The clear bin allows for us to easily inventory what food we have on hand.

Tidy Heart Transformation | Multi-Purpose Family Room

The transformation in this multi-purpose family room has been one of my favorites to date! I had a blast and totally nerd-ed out applying my design and space planning skills to help this space transform into zones for the whole family.

The Challenge + Solution

This family’s little Picasso toddler artist was in need of a thoughtful, designated arts and crafts space within this family room. Additionally, there was opportunity to better utilize the space that could provide zones for the whole family (living, reading, play, and more). The current set-up was a perimeter usage vs creating designated uses within the space.

We collaborated on a layout that allowed for half of the room to serve as a living room space (aka football watching central). By moving the furniture to this space and moving the TV to a mounted unit on the wall, we maximized the space and created a zone for TV watching and entertaining.

We added zones for play, reading and arts and crafts on the other end of the room. IKEA benches made the perfect table spaces with storage underneath for arts and crafts. The reading nook utilized their existing Nugget in a cozy configuration with a new IKEA bookshelf featuring books and educational toys with a drawer housing puzzles and other games.

To establish the feel for the zones I started with a mood board to paint a vision for what the space could look like when we bring it to life.

Tidy Heart Transformation | Kitchen Pantry

The Challenge:

This busy family was in need of a kitchen and storage command center that would make life easier. They had recently edited the space, but lacked a system and zones for making it easy to find homes for their kitchen-related items. Additionally, the infrastructure of the space wasn’t maximizing the true room space available.

The Solution:

To tackle this project, we spent time doing additional light editing. It’s amazing what lives within a space when you pull it all out and go through each item. After identifying the key categories of items, frequency of access and future planning needs (e.g., where will the backstock live?) we created a game plan. The game plan included categories like food preservation, entertaining, daily baking/cooking and backstock. After installing wire shelving and purchasing product, the install was a success.

We also created an “Appliance Command Center” within a cube organizer. This space contains all the appliances the family accesses frequently for making meals while utilizing bins to contain accessories in and easy to access space.

A Peek: The Game Plan

Before installing, I created a plan for the space. This included the categories of items and context to why. For example, entertaining is on the right, out of the way and closest to the cube organizer as it’s accessed less frequently than the baking or kid snacks.

Every client’s goals are different, which is why I love this step of the process!

Here’s a peek at what we looked to contain and maximize the space. A mix of clear and contained bins allows for us to see what needs a pulse (e.g., backstock) while bins were the perfect use to contain cluttered items like appliance accessories.

Summer To-Go Bin

Our family is on the move in the summer! From tee ball to fair activities to visiting friends and family or the local splash pad – there is no shortage of running from here to there. I finally got tired of hunting down swim suits, sunscreen, etc. when we were rushing out the door. Or worse yet, realizing I forgot something when we arrived.

Enter: The Summer To-Go Bin!

What’s in a summer to-go bin?

Choose your favorite bin with handles for easy to-and-from the car. I love mDesign.

Add swim/water essentials like goggles, swim suits, sunscreen and my newest favorite item – reusable waterballoons!

Don’t forget the aftermath and the downtime while drying. Bubble wands are a life saver and you can re-fill them. And I always carry a wet-dry bag to throw the wet swim suits in, too.
